What is Geo-Integrator?
Geo-Integrator has been initiated by the WhereGroup, is maintained, developed and funded by the Geo-Community,Individuals, GFOSS companies and Users. It comprises:
- Architectural design driven by Interoperability
- Comprehensive set of Free Software and Open Source modules
- Metadata Catalog and Gazetteer
- InterWiki Links
- Future Development Plans
Furthermore Geo-Integrator has a business edge.
Software Development
Software development is thoroughly distributed. Find the respective contributors in the relevant Geo-Community, User Mailing Lists at work for the GFOSS Companies or as Individuals. Usually there will be several versions of the software package available:
- Stable Version Software for Productive Environments
- Development Version directly from the CVS
- Experimental Edge Software for Development
There are more terms like Kitchen Sink or Bleeding Edge, find out what you need to get going.
Definition of the Problem
Typical problems regarding spatial data have to be adressed by municipalities, portal operators, private industries, and other organisations. These encompass:
- Centralized Storage of Spatial Data
- Visualization of Maps in the Web or Intranet
- Spatial Data Manipulation and Analysis
- Security Concepts
To address these issues, software components can be integrated into a special type of IT-architecture called SDI.
Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) Design
Planning and setting up an SDI is more demanding than just paying for a reportedly suitable software. The following parameters have to be taken into account:
- Heterogenous IT-infrastructures
- Individual security architectures
- Integration of existing spatial data
- Integration of existing GIS-products and applications
- Interoperability and platform independence
- Scalability
The Solution
The combined know-how of the WhereGroup and GFOSS Companies have developed a number of modules to solve these tasks. Some of these modules have been aggregated into Geo-Integrator Products operating in a standardized architecture. Additionally individual Geo-Integrator Modules can be compiled into any architecture to solve individual problems.
