The ~GetCapabilities-request is essential to all OGC web service specifications. When requested the server will return a Capabilities document which contains all information required to request more information (for example a map or a feature) from the corresponding server. The URL referencing the Capabilities Document is the "Online Resource" of any OGC web service. Check OGC WMS for an example request and Capabilities document.

Die ~GetCapabilities-Anfrage ist die zentrale Funktionalität, um von einem OGC standardisierten Dienst (WMS, WFS, WTS, WCS, etc.) den Leistungskatalog anzufordern. Der Server antwortet auf eine ~GetCapabilities-Anfrage mit einer Liste der enthaltenen Daten, Formate und Leistungen, die vom Client ausgewertet werden können. Die URL (der Pfad oder Link) zum Capabilities-Dokument wird als die "Online Resource" bezeichnet. Sie finden ein Beispiel auf der Seite OGC WMS.
