ISO is the abbreviation for the International Organisation for Standardization. Yes - it is correctly spelled the wrong way round. If you are as fat, important and self centered as the ISO then you can do such things.

To find some of the more relevant standards in the spatial realm search for 19119 (metadata for spatial services) or 19115 (metadata for spatial data). Most important ISO specifications are implemented together with the OGC.
All ISO documents have to be bought (actually paid for) and are thus not Free in the context of the GNU FDL. This does not prevent these standards to be implemented by several Free Software projects. Operative environments set the standards for local, national and international SDI implement.
