This page lists a selection of Mapbender implementations that have been contributed by the Mapbender community. If you operate a healthy, fast and functional site powered by Mapbender yourself we invite you to send us a link or add it to the Wiki yourself. You can also add your location to the Mapbender User Map. It uses the OSGeo Software Stack to create GML points that are stored using the GeoServer OGC WFS-T standard in a PostgreSQL PostGIS database and are rendered as a map using the MapServer OGC WMS. All information that you add to the User Map is publicly available, the description is displayed as a tool tip and if you enter a link to your Mapbender host it opens as a hot link.

Summary

The German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate operates a geoportal to manage state wide and privately operated OGC standardized geospatial data services.

Problem Description

The state of Rhineland Palatinate operates a growing number of spatial data services with software from several vendors and needs to provide access to a broad range of users from the general public to specific secure environments. Additional spatial data related to the region is maintained through services operated by the state's municiplaities, the German state and private data providers. Access to some data sources has to be secured, controlled and logged on a user, group and functional level.

The need for domain specific web based applications is growing quickly requiring comprehensive tracking and monitoring of servcies.

Requirements

From the problem definition the following (shortened) requirements for the implementation of the geoportal were identified. The full list of requirements is available through the Ministry of the Interior.

Manage any number of OGC WMS and WFS services running on an arbitrary number of different vendor software
Centralized spatial web service repository
Service metadata monitoring and custodian notification
Notification of Web application operator in case of changes of service meta data
Service availablitiy monitor, notification of custodian / publisher / operator
Secure access to services that contain privacy related or restrictively licensed data
Binding 1000+ identities from within public administration authentication system to geoportal authorization and OWS Security Access façade
Transparent user management for 5000+ users outside of the public administration authentication system and bind to secure OWS access façade
Provide access management on a group, user, feature and functionality/application basis
Fully mandate capable user management
Meta data publishing conforming with INSPIRE

Solution

Most requirements defined by the GeoPortal.rlp analysis document could be addressed by standard out of the box software installations. The core software of the geoportal is the Mapbender framework. Some extensions had to be implemented to the meta data management layer, OWS security proxy and WFS-T service repository. All development that could be implemented as generic modules was added to the Mapbender core allowing it to be reused by other clients.

The Geoportal is designed to act as a broker between users and providers of spatial data, information and spatially related services. The portal offers centralized access to spatial data in Rhineland-Palatinate through services organized by meta data in a reporistory.

The geoportal serves federal state agencies, municipal authorities and private data providers as a platform to maintain their meta data and present their data and services. Direct access to the distributed data sources of each spatial product and service provider ensures that information made available by these institutions on a joint platform is up-to-date. The geoportal does not store any data but only its meta data, service meta data, user identity information and application configuration.

The Portal - User Perspective

Within Geo Data Infrastructure Rhineland-Palatinate, it is upon GeoPortal.rlp to assume the role of the service-oriented agent brokering spatial data between users and providers.

The core functionality of the protal provided to the end user follows the three steps:

The distributed access paradigm keeps the responsibility for the data, service, acutality and authorization with the body in charge (creator, custodian, reseller) guaranteeing a high level of topicality and actuality. The panoply of geo data made available enables users to create their own individual spatial data product and web application. The consistent and comprehensive application of recognized ISO and OGC standards throughout GeoPortal.rlp allow for a smooth exchange of data.

Das Geoportal Rheinland Pfalz ermöglicht den Zugriff auf über 70 WMS Kartendienste mit mehreren hundert Ebenen. Die Kartendienste werden von Landesministerien und kommunalen Verwaltungen, gemeinnützigen Organisationen und der privaten Wirtschaft betrieben.

Damit wird ein Teil des gewaltigen Potenzials an Daten und an Geoinformationen, die über Jahrzehnte aufgenommen worden sind in Wert gesetzt, sagte der Geschäftsführer des Bonner Unternehmens WhereGroup, Arnulf Christl. Das kümmerliche Dasein in den Kellern ist vorbei, weil mit Hilfe des Internets die erforderliche nahtlose Vernuetzung möglich ist. Die in der zum 1. Januar 2007 offiziell zur WhereGroup fusionierte Firma CCGIS, [Q4U] und SAG-EL CeGIT haben das Portal entwickelt. Das neue Portal basiert auf einer seit September 2005 bestehenden ersten Ausbaustufe und ist Teil des deutschlandweiten Projekts "Geodateninfrastruktur Deutschland".

Agricultural Information and Online Subsidy Grant Request System operated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Regions, Baden-Wuerttemberg.

This online system allows farmers to view and edit their agricultural land management information. Subsidy grants can be requested online. The system is implemented using the OSGeo SDI-Stack. Read more about FIONA.

GLOWA Volta Geoportal

The GLOWA Volta Geoportal interdisciplinary GLOWA Volta Project (GVP) was launched in May 2000 to support sustainable water resource management in the riparian countries of the Volta Basin in West Africa. Scientists, students and experts from Africa and Europe develop scientifically sound Decision Support Resources for the authorities in the region.

Their objective is the analysis of the physical and socio-economic determinants of the hydrological cycle in the Volta Basin in the face of global change. The third phase of the GVP (June 2007-May 2009) aims at the transfer of knowledge, tools and technology to our African partners.

Das Geoportal Mittenwalde steht als Informations- und Auskunftssystem für alle Bürgerinnen und Bürger sowie Investoren und Wirtschaft zur Verfügung. Es informiert über planungsrelevante Daten wie Naturschutzgebiete, Bebeauungspläne, Satzungen, Gewerbe- und Industriegebiete, ÖPNV und über Points of Interest (POI - Orte von besonderem Interesse) wie Denkmäler, Spielplätze, Friedhöfe und öffentliche Gebäude. Darüber hinaus können sich die Bürgerinnen und Bürger die Liegenschaftskarte, die Topographische Karte und die Luftbilder von der LGB (Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg) anzeigen lassen.

Alle Themen stehen als WMS-Dienst zur Verfügung und sollen in Zukunft auch über die Suchmaschine GeoMIS des Landes Brandenburg publiziert werden. Es ist ebenso möglich, gezielt nach Daten wie Bebauungsplänen, Satzungen, Bushaltestellen, POIs oder Strassennamen zu suchen. Die Daten kann man mit eigenem Kommentar wahlweise in verschiedene Blattformate ausdrucken. Des Weiteren ist es nach Bedarf möglich eigene Strecken und Flächen zu messen.

This Mapbender application provides access to hiking and mountainbiking trails in the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte-Nord region. It features a rich set of points of interests, a routing option on either the hiking or mtb trails, with generation of the corresponding elevation profile. At the moment the calculated track can be downloaded in Google Earth and Garmin GPX formats.

Der Naturpark-Scout bietet die Möglichkeit das Wander- und Mountainbiking Angebot des Naturparks Schwarzwald Mitte-Nord (Pilotprojekt Enztal) zu erkunden. Neben der umfangreiche Sammlung Touristischer Informationen (POIs) bietet die Anwendung in der Pilotphase ein einfaches Routing für das Wander- oder MTB-Wegenetz mit Ermittlung des Höhenprofils. Die berechnete Route kann momentan im Google Earth und Garmin GPX Format heruntergeladen werden.

Einer von sieben Menschen geht jeden Tag hungrig zu Bett. Weltweit sind es 854 Millionen. Hunger gehört zu den größten globalen Problemen und Herausforderungen. Fortschritte im Kampf gegen Hunger und Armut sind dringend nötig. Der von IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute) entwickelte Welthunger-Index ist ein geeignetes Instrument, um Hunger zu erfassen und für Lobby- und Advocacy-Arbeit auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene zu nutzen. Die Berechnung der WHI-Werte ist auf Entwicklungsländer und Transformationsländer beschränkt, für die der Messung von Hunger die größte Bedeutung beigelegt wird.

The calculation of the Global Hunger Index is limited to developing countries and countries in transition, assuming that measurement of hunger is of greatest importance for these.

Die Firma terrestris baut seit 2003 das WebGIS der Stadtverwaltung Soest auf. Derzeit beinhaltet das System neben Basisdaten wie Luftbildern und topographischen Kartenwerken auch Daten der Stadtgrundkarte, Naturschutzgebiete, Bebauungspläne, soziale Infrastruktur, den Flächennutzungsplan und eine Wahllokalkarte mit Darstellung der letzten Wahlergebnisse. Weitere Anwendungen erlauben die graphische Darstellung von potentiell zu evakuierenden Personen im Falle einer Bombenentschärfung und diverse räumliche Suchen.
