At the FOSS4G conference Markus Neteler was honored with the Sol Katz Award for his commitment and enthusiasm in reviving and leading the GRASS project.

His motto regarding Public Geodata is: Open Access to State-Collected Geographic Information is a Right, Not a Privilege.
