The term Proprietary indicates that a party exercises private ownership, control or use over an item of property, usually to the exclusion of other parties.
As a rule of thumb you can say:
- Proprietary Software is the opposite licensing model to Free Software and Open Source
- Proprietary Software cannot be Open Source or Free Software
- Proprietary Software can implement Open Standards and can use the term Open in many ways. Nonetheless it is still closed and proprietary
- Proprietary Software marketing can make use of the word free (for example in freeware). Nonetheless it is still closed and proprietary
