Public Administration of the City of Nuremberg
The city map of Stadt Nuremberg contains more then 100 different topics which can be displayed by opening the tree folder and checking the corresponding boxes. The interface has been enhanced with an address finder and search interface for topics.
Find an Address
Either select a letter from the alphabet which will list the corresponding street names or enter the name or part of the name and select OK. If more than one street name fits the search criteria they are all listed in the box below. Selecting a street name from that list by clicking on it will zoom the map to the extent of that street and list all the corresponding house numbers. Moving the mouse over the street names or numbers will temporarily highlight the objects in the map. Clicking on the number will again zoom the map and set a permanent marker (blue circle).
Find Objects and Points of Interest
Enter search criteria into the box titles Suchen: (search) below the tree folder. Try out "kindergarten" or "museum". The results can come from any of the layers contained in the tree folder layer structure. For the search criteria "museum" you will find parking lots, public administration offices that manage museums and oviously the museum themselves. Clicking on one of the results will automatically activate that layer if it is not active already and add it to the legend list (to the left of the map window).
Legend
Clicking on the legend will list all object of that category in the result box in the lower left of the application. Hovering with the mouse over the entries will highlight them in the map, clicking on them will zoom the map.
Getting more Information
Simply click into the map on the overlaying symbols to get more information on the corresponding objects. The resulting pop up windows will link to all kinds of internal and external information.
Technology Used
The system has been set up completely with Free and Open Source Software components from the operating system to the web server. The spatial data components comprise:
- PostgreSQL object relational database
- PostGIS spatial database extension
- MapServer OGC WMS server
- Mapbender as OGC WMS client framework
Map Services
The system hosts three map services that can be turned on and off exclusively as background to the application.
- Luftbild (ortho imagery) (see it linked into the Orthophoto City of Nuremberg demo GUI)
- Nutzungskarte (land use map)
- Stadtkarte (topographic base map)
All maps are rendered by MapServer, the land use map and POI features are stored in the PostgreSQL/PostGIS database.
History of the Project
This application has been implemented in 2004 with the first stable version of the Mapbender 2.0 interface. It has been implemented by the Department of Statistics for the city administration of Nuremberg in the context of the MEDIA@Komm project. Attribution goes to the late Dr. Helmut Büscher whose deep knowledge of the data, usability and constant tuning helped to set up a very comprehensive solution, we will keep him in good memory.
