About the Open Source Geospatial Foundation

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data. The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration.

OSGeo is still a nascent organization and in the process of taking final shape. While the initial membership and Board of Directors has been formed, the foundation's governance model is undergoing review and discussion. Participation in this process is open to all in the open geospatial community. To participate, please review the foundation information available on this site in order to familiarize yourself with the issues and the discussions taking place, and then sign up for our mailing lists where discussion is taking place. OSGeo will ultimately expand to support multiple projects related to digital cartography and geospatial data and analysis. Each project will be headed by a Project Steering Committee (PSC) appointed by the OSGeo Board of Directors. All of the foundation's work is conducted in public forums among an open community of participants.

• To provide resources for foundation projects - infrastructure, funding (Fundraising), legal, ...
• To promote freely available geodata - free software is useless without data (Public Geospatial Data Project)
• To promote the use of open source software in the geospatial industry (not just foundation software) - PR, training, outreach, ...
• Promotion and Visibility Committee
• To encourage the implementation of open standards and standards-based interoperability in foundation projects.
• To ensure a high degree of quality in foundation projects in order to build and preserve the foundation "brand".
• To make foundation and related software more accessible to end users - binary "stack" builds, cross package documentation, etc.
• To provide support for the use of OSGeo software in education via curriculum development, outreach, and support (Core Curriculum Project).
• To encourage communication and cooperation between OSGeo communities on different language (ie Java/C/Python) and operating system (Win32, Unix, MacOS) platforms.
• To support use and contribution to foundation projects from the worldwide community through internationalization of software and community outreach.
• To operate an annual OSGeo Conference, possibly in cooperation with related efforts (e.g. EOGEO).
• To award the Sol Katz award for service to the OSGeo community.

Die Open Source Geospatial Foundation, oder OSGeo, ist eine gemeinnützige Organisation, deren Ziel es ist die Open Source Anwendergemeinschaft im Umfeld der räumlichen Datenverarbeitung zu unterstützen und gemeinschaftliche Entwicklungen zu fördern. Es werden Softwareprojekte zur Anzeige, Analyse und Auskunft geographischer Daten und Karten gezeigt. Diese herkömmlich als GIS bezeichnete Software hat sich in den letzten Jahren stark in Richtung vernetzter Technologien weiterentwickelt.

Die OSGeo stellt finanzielle Mittel und Organisationsstrukturen zur Verfügung, bietet rechtlichen Beistand für Software-Projekte und setzt sich aktiv für die Verbreitung öffentlich verfügbarer Geodaten ein. Die transparente Organisationsstruktur gewährleistet, dass Entwicklungen (Code), finanzielle Mittel und andere Resourcen, die von Mitgliedern der OSGeo Awendergemeinschaft beigesteuert werden zielgerichtet eingesetzt werden. Die OSGeo fördert die Verbreitung von Open Source Software und Verfügbarkeit räumlicher Daten durch aktive Wissensvermittlung mit der Öffentlichkeit und die Bereitstellung einer hochvernetzten Kommunikationsinfrastruktur für die Mitglieder.

Die OSGeo ist in der Entwicklungsphase und nimmt bereits konkrete Formen an. Die Organisation verfügt über 45 gewählte Mitglieder, die einen international besetzten Vorstand mit neun Mitgliedern gewählt haben. Während die inhaltichen Grundlagen weiter entwickelt werde, wurden bereits Steuerungsgremien als Komitees gebildet. Auch dieser Prozess ist offen und es wird eine möglichst hohe Beteiligung angestrebt, um ein tragfähiges Fundament zu erstellen. Ein guter Einstieg, um sich aktiv zu engagieren sind die Webseiten unter http://www.osgeo.org, sowie mehrere Mailing Listen zu unterschiedlichen Themen. OSGeo wird sich zu einer breiten Plattform entwickeln, die eine Vielzahl von Geodaten-Arbeitsgruppen und Software Entwicklungsprojekten beherbergen wird. Jedes Projekt wird durch ein Steuerungsgremium (Project Steering Committee oder kurz PSC) geleitet, dass von dem Vorstand benannt wird. Die gesamte Kommunikation und Entwicklung erfolgt über öffentliche Listen und Foren in der traditionellen Art von Open Source Entwicklungsmodellen.

Alle OSGeo-Projekte stehen zur freien Nutzung bereit und werden durch OSI-zertifizierte Open Source Lizenzen geschützt.

Ziele der OSGeo sind die Unterstützung der Entwicklung und Verbreitung von Open Source Software für die Geodatenverarbeitung.

Die folgenden detailliert beschriebenen Ziele kennzeichnen die übergreifende Aufgabe der OSGeo.

• Förderung von frei verfügbaren Geodaten - freie Software ist nutzlos ohne Daten (Public Geospatial Data Projekt)
• Förderung des Einsatzes von Open Source Software in der Geoinformatik Industrie (nicht nur bei der Software der Stiftung) - PR Schulungen, Beratung, ...
• Promotion and Visibility Kommittee
• Förderung der Implementation von offenen Standards und standardbasierter Interoperabilität bei den Projekten der Stiftung.
• Sicherung eines hohen Qualitätstandards der Stiftungsprojekte, um die Stiftung als "Markenprodukt" aufzubauen und zu erhalten.
• Erhöhung der Zugänglichkeit der Software der Stiftung für Endverbraucher - binär Kompilate, Packet Dokumentationen, etc. etc.
• Bereitstellung von Support für den Einsatz von OSGeo Software im Bildungswesen durch die Entwicklung von Lehrstoff, Beratung, und weiterer Unterstützung (Core Curriculum Projekt).
• Förderung der Kommunkation und Kooperation zwischen OSGeo Gemeinden mit verschiedenen Skriptsprachen (z.B. Java/C/Python) und Betriebssystemen (Win32, Unix, MacOS).
• Unterstützung des Einsatzes und der Verbreitung der Stiftungsprojekte für die weltweite Gemeinschaft durch Internationalisierung der Software und der Beratung durch die Gemeinschaft.
