The User-friendly Desktop Internet GIS (uDig) is both an application with which users can create, acquire, view, and modify geospatial data and a platform through which developers can create new, derived applications. uDig can therefore provide a core element in an internet aware Geographic Information System.
uDig is written in the Java language and is free software licensed to anyone under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) so that the uDig source code is open for anyone to examine, use, modify, and redistribute.
uDig is based on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform and uses several third party code libraries, most notably the Geotools geospatial library. uDig has been developped with a strong emphasis on supporting the public standards being developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and with a special focus on the Web Map Server and Web Feature Server standards.
