Web Map Context Documents are XML documents that contain all information neede to display a set of maps for a selected area and size. These can come from one or more OGC Web Map Services (WMS) and display the map composition within a given area of interest. Web Map Context Documents can be generated, saved, reused and exchanged within and between mapping applications that implement the OGC WMC standards. Web Map Context Documents can be compared to "projects" or "workspaces" in conventional GIS desktop applications, but they are standardized and thus compatible between different software packages.

There are many uses for Context documents:

  • The Context document can provide default startup views for particular classes of user. Such a document would have a long lifetime and public accessibility.
  • The Context document can save the state of a viewer client as the user navigates and modifies map layers to be able to start at the same point that the application was left.
  • The Context document can not only store the current settings but also additional information about each layer (e.g., available styles, formats, SRS, etc.) to avoid having to query the map server again once the user has selected a layer.
  • The Context documents can be saved with one client and transferred to a different application to start up with the same context.
  • Context Documents can be created by Catalog Service applications to start up mapping software with a set of search results.

Web Map Context Dokumente sind XML Dokumente, die eine oder mehrere Karten referenzieren, die von einem oder mehreren Web Map Services beretisgestellt werden, um eine Kartenkomposition für ein bestimmtes Gebiet anzuzeigen. Web Map Context Dokumente können innerhalb und zwischen Client Applikationen generiert, gespeichert, wieder verwendet und ausgetauscht werden. Web Map Context Dokumente sind vergleichbar zu "Projekten" oder "Worpspaces" herkömmlicher GIS Desktop Anwendungen.


Es gibt verschiedene Verwendungszwecke für Context Dokumente:

  • Das Context Dokument kann eine bestimme Startansicht für eine bestimmte Klasse von Benutzern liefern. Solche Dokumente können eine lange Lebenszeit haben und können öffenlich zugänglich sein.
  • Das Context Dokument kann die aktuelle Ansicht eines Clients speichern während der Benutzer navigiert und die Kartenlayer modifiziert.
  • Das Context Dokument kann nicht nur die aktuellen Einstellungen speichern, sondern auch zusätzliche Informationen über jeden Layer (z.B. verfügbare Styles, Formate, SRS, etc.), um zu vermeiden, dass eine wiederholte Anfrage an den Kartenserver gestellt wird durch einen ausgewählten Layer.
  • Das Context Dokument kann von einer Client Session abgespeichert und transferiert werden, um in einer anderen Client Applikation aufgerufen und weiterbearbeitet werden zu können.
  • Context Dokumente können aus den Ergebnissen einer Katalogdienst-Suche erstellt werden, die Kartenanwendung startet dann direkt mit den richtigen Daten im gewünschten Ausschnitt.
